How to log on and authenticate with MitID chip

The MitID chip is a physical electronic device that functions as an alternative to the MitID app. The MitID chip is particularly suitable for people who frequently need to log in or approve actions with MitID, for example in connection with work.

How to use your MitID chip

When you need to log in or approve something with the MitID chip, you must first enter your user ID and password. Then connect the MitID chip using the included cable and press the button. You have now approved with MitID.

Step by step guide

  1. Go to the website or app where you want to log in or approve using MitID and find the log in button.
  2. Enter your user ID and tap Continue. You created your user ID when you set up your MitID. You will use it every time you log in or approve with MitID.
  3. Note that the first time you use the MitID chip, you must choose to approve with it in the future. After entering your user ID, tap 'Change MitID identification method' and select MitID chip.
  4. Then enter your password. You created this password when you activated your MitID chip.
  5. Read what you are about to approve with MitID. If the text does not match what you want to do, tap Cancel.
  6. Tap Start.
  7. Connect your MitID chip to your computer, phone, or tablet. You can connect it using the supplied USB cable, Bluetooth, or a contactless (NFC) connection (read more below).
  8. If you connect via USB cable or Bluetooth, press the button on the MitID chip.
If you use contactless connection (NFC), simply hold the MitID chip close to the back of your device.
  9. Please note: the window displaying “Use your security key with mitid.dk” will close automatically. Do not click Cancel.
  10. You are now logged in with MitID.

Video guide: How to use the MitID chip (English subtitles)

It is possible to connect the MitID chip in the following ways:

  • You can connect your MitID chip to your device via USB cable.
  • A USB cable is included when you receive your MitID chip.

You can connect your MitID chip to your device via contactless connection (NFC).
  • You can connect your MitID chip to your device via contactless connection (NFC).
  • The MitID chip has a built-in NFC chip, just like contactless payment cards. This means that you can authenticate with your MitID chip simply by holding it to your device where you are authenticating or logging in with MitID.
  • You do not need to press the button on your MitID chip to authenticate with the contactless function - if you press the button, you prevent the NFC functionality. Hold the chip close to the back of the device. If the device has a cover, it may hinder the connection. Therefore, it is recommended to temporarily remove the cover to ensure the connection.
  • This requires that your computer, tablet or smartphone also has a built-in NFC chip.  NFC is automatically enabled on iOS, but on Android you may need to enable it yourself in your phone's settings.

  • You can connect your MitID chip to your device via Bluetooth.
  • First connect (pair) your MitID chip to your computer, tablet or smartphone. Bluetooth must be turned on on your device in order to connect to the MitID chip.
  • Note: The Bluetooth function does not work with iOS and Windows 11.
