New updates for the MitID app are regularly released, incorporating ongoing improvements, security measures, bug fixes and additional features. A significant recent update, for instance, introduced QR code scanning when approving transactions on a computer, implemented in June 2023 to reduce the risk of fraud. These crucial security enhancements are not present in the old version of the MitID app, leading to its phase out on May 28, 2024.
The vast majority of MitID users already use the latest version of the MitID app with the most recent security measures, bug fixes and features and will not be affected by the phase out. For the users still using the old version of the MitID app, in most cases, they can simply update to a newer version of the MitID app.
However, a few MitID users currently use MitID on devices so old that they can no longer install the latest software updates for Android or iOS. This means they cannot update to a newer version of the MitID app. From May 28, 2024, these users will not be able to use the MitID app on their old devices.
To continue using MitID after May 28, these users must order either a free MitID code display or audio code reader or install the MitID app on a newer phone or tablet. For iPhones, you can install the MitID app on iPhone 6S and all models released after that, which correspond to iOS 15 and later. For Android, the MitID app works on Android 9 and later versions.
The affected users will be informed directly via Digital Post/physical mail in the coming week. This will give them sufficient time to order and receive a free code display or audio code reader.
Updates are important to enhance security
As phone and tablet models age, manufacturers often stop updating the operating system in older models. When your phone/tablet is not updated, you do not receive the bug fixes, security updates and new features that are developed.
When your phone/tablet cannot be updated, it can affect all the apps you have on your phone/tablet, including the MitID app. The MitID app is regularly updated with both user-friendly and security improvements and to fix any potential errors. It is these important updates to the MitID app that older phones no longer support. Failure to update your phone/tablet and the MitID app makes you more vulnerable to hacking and fraud. Therefore, from May 28, it will no longer be possible to use the MitID app on older phones/tablets.
