What does this mean for you?
The vast majority of MitID users already use MitID on a phone or tablet where they can update both the operating system and the MitID app – and thus receive the latest security measures, bug fixes, and features. These users will not be affected by the phase-out.
However, a small number of MitID users currently use MitID on devices so old that they can no longer install the latest software updates for Android. This means they cannot update to a newer version of the MitID app. Failure to update your phone/tablet and the MitID app makes you more vulnerable to hacking and fraud.
To continue using MitID after August 12, affected users can order a free MitID code display or audio code reader, or install the MitID app on a newer phone or tablet.
You will be notified directly
The affected users will be informed directly via Digital Post/physical mail in the coming week. This will give them sufficient time to order and receive a free MitID code display or audio code reader.
Why updates to phones/tablets are important for security
As phone and tablet models age, manufacturers often stop updating the operating system in older models. When your phone/tablet is not updated, you do not receive the bug fixes, security updates and new features that are developed.
When your phone/tablet cannot be updated, it can affect all the apps you have on your phone/tablet, including the MitID app. The MitID app is regularly updated with both user-friendly and security improvements and to fix any potential errors. It is these important updates to the MitID app that older phones no longer support. Failure to update your phone/tablet and the MitID app makes you more vulnerable to hacking and fraud. Therefore, from August 12, it will no longer be possible to use the MitID app on older phones/tablets running on Android 9.
