How to log on and authenticate with MitID audio code reader

The MitID audio code reader is an electronic device that serves as an alternative to the MitID app. The MitID audio code reader looks like a small calculator and is particularly suitable for people with visual impairments. It displays and reads aloud a one-time code, which you use to log in or approve actions with MitID.

How to use your MitID audio code reader

When you need to log in or approve something with the MitID audio code reader, you must first enter your user ID and a 6-digit one-time code from the code reader. Then enter your password, and you have now approved with MitID.

Step by step guide

  1. Go to the website or app where you want to log in or approve with MitID and find the Log in button.
  2. Enter your user ID and click Continue. You created your user ID when you first got MitID. You will need it every time you log in or approve with MitID.
  3. Note that the first time you use the MitID audio code reader, you must choose to approve with it in the future. After entering your user ID, click 'Change MitID identification method' and select MitID audio code reader.
  4. Read what you are about to approve with MitID. If the text does not match what you want to do, click Cancel.
  5. Press the red button at the bottom right of the MitID audio code reader. You can feel the button—it has one raised dot. The code reader will turn on and display/read aloud a 6-digit one-time code.
  6. Enter the 6-digit one-time code from the MitID audio code reader on the screen and click Continue.
  7. Then enter your password. You created this password when you activated your MitID audio code reader.
  8. You are now logged in with MitID.

Please note that the MitID audio code reader can be customized in several ways. For example, you can adjust the volume and language of the device. Read here how to adjust your MitID audio code reader.

"Red button" and one-time code

A single tap on a red button in the lower right corner reads out the one-time code that you need to use when authenticating with MitID. You can also notice that the red button has a single dot.

"Red button" and other functions

Together with other keys, the red button can control functions such as one-time code repetition, speed, volume and language. Hold down the red button while pressing another button. As a rule of thumb, the buttons on the right turn up slightly, and the buttons on the left turn down.

There are 9 functions in total:

  1. Show and read the one-time password (only red button)
Press the ‘red button’ which is placed on the lower right. You can feel the button has a slight bump in the surface. You need the one-time password in order to approve with MitID.
  2. Read the one-time password again (red button + 0)
Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘0’, which is placed on the left of the ‘red button’.
  3. Turn up the volume (red button + 9)
Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘9’, which is placed right above the ‘red button’.
  4. Turn down the volume (red button + 7)

  7. Change language – choose between Danish and English (red button + 1)
Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘1’, which is placed first in the top row.
  8. Turn off the audio code reader (only red button)
The audio code reader is automatically turned off after 20 seconds without activity. You can also turn it off by pressing the ‘red button’ at the bottom of the audio code reader.
  9. Read the serial number (red button + 5)
Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘5’, which is placed in the middle of the second row from the top.

You will need the serial number when activating your audio code reader.

Be aware of this before you confirm

As you enter your code and confirm, you are completing an important step in a process, e.g. transferring money.

If the text you are confronted with does not match your expectations, you should cancel your action immediately

Safeguard your MitID

  • Always keep your user ID and password separate from your audio code reader.
  • Never hand over your user ID, codes or audio code reader to anyone else.
  • Block your audio code reader, if you lose it. You can do this here at MitID.dk or at a Citizen Service Center.
  • Remember that you should never log in or authorise based on phone calls from someone claiming to be from your bank, the police, Citizen Service or support.
