Technical requirements

MitID is intended for all of us to use, therefore the technical requirements to your computer, smartphone or tablet are few and simple.

If you already are using the internet for news, banking and shopping, then the same devices are capable of using MitID. However, there are certain technical requirements to your computer, smartphone or tablet. Make sure that your operating system and internet browser are updated. Read below which technical requirements that are required.

For MitID to work on your smartphone or tablet, it requires an operating system and an internet browser that supports the use of MitID.

As of February 2024 the following combinations are supported on smartphones and tablets:

iPhone/iPad

  • At least an iPhone 6S with the operating system updated to at least iOS 15 and the latest version of Mobile Safari, Google Chrome or SFSafari View Controller (app-app) internet browser.
  • Scanning a passport requires at least an iPhone 7 with the operating system updated to at least iOS 15
  • At least iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4 with the operating system updated to at least iPadOS 15 and the latest version of Mobile Safari, Google Chrome or SFSafari View Controller (app-app) internet browser.

Android phones or tablets

  • Android 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 with the latest version of Google Chrome, Custom tabs (app-app) or Samsung Browser internet browser. 

Please note: 

  • You can only install the MitID app on devices that can guarantee the level of security required. This means that if your smartphone is jailbroken or rooted, or if you use a beta-version of iOS or Android, you will not be able to install the MitID app.
  • Incognito mode does not support the use of MitID.
  • In regard to connection methods please note that iOS supports only NFC when using the MitID chip.
  • JavaScript must be activated in your browser for you to use MitID.

For MitID to work on your computer, it requires an operating system and an internet browser that supports the use of MitID.

As of February 2024 the following combinations are supported on computers:

  • Microsoft Windows 10 and 11 with latest version of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge internet browser.
  • Apple Mac OS X 12, 13, 14 and 15 with latest version of Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome internet browser.

We cannot guarantee that MitID will work with other operating systems or internet browsers than the ones listed.

MitID often works on newer Chromebooks, but we do not officially support or test it. Therefore, we do not recommend using MitID on a Chromebook.

In regard to connection methods please note the following:

  • Apple Mac supports only USB
  • Windows 11 does not support U2F (Chip) with Bluetooth

JavaScript must be activated in your browser for you to use MitID.

The MitID app can only be downloaded from the most widely used app stores: the Apple App Store (for iPhone and iPad) and the Google Play store (for Android devices). This is primarily because iOS and Android include built-in security features that help protect against fraud involving MitID.

Above, you can see the operating systems and browsers on which MitID is guaranteed to work. In practice, however, MitID may also function on less widely used operating systems and browsers.

MitID must provide a high and consistent level of security for users. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously test that MitID works optimally. It is neither technically, practically, nor economically possible to ensure that MitID works on all operating systems, browsers, and devices. The selection of operating systems and browsers on which MitID can be guaranteed to work is based on an ongoing balance between IT security, stable operation, and broad accessibility.

It is also possible to use MitID without a smartphone or tablet. Physical alternatives to the app are available – the MitID code display, the audio code reader, and the chip. The code display and the audio code reader can be ordered free of charge.

It is not possible to order or log on with MitID, if your browser doesn’t allow cookies.

You can configure your browser to either alert you to approve cookies or to automatically approve or reject cookies.
