MitID code display

The MitID code display is a small electronic device that serves as an alternative to the MitID app. The code display shows a one-time code when you press its button. You must enter this one-time code when you log in or approve an action using MitID.

The MitID code display is designed for users who do not wish to use the MitID app on their phone or tablet. You may also choose to have MitID available in several places for example, both on your phone and on the MitID code display. That way, you always have a backup and can still approve with MitID even if, for instance, you lose your phone with the MitID app installed.

How to order a MitID code display

You can order a MitID code display in two ways:

  1. On MitID.dk
  2. By visiting a Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice)

Please note that the first three MitID code displays you order are free of charge. After the three free ones, each additional code display costs 41.76 DKK. You can only have one active device at a time.

1) Order a MitID code display on MitID.dk

  1. Click here to start ordering your MitID code display.
  2. Start by identifying yourself—either by logging in with your MitID or by entering your CPR number and your Danish or Greenlandic passport number. You can also order a MitID code display without identifying yourself, but in that case, you must pay for it.
  3. Choose how you would like your MitID code display delivered: 
    • To your address by post. You will receive it within 3–7 business days. Note that delivery may take longer for addresses outside Denmark.
    • For collection at a Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice). Remember to bring valid identification, such as a passport or driver’s license.
    • Read here, which identification you need to bring. Note that you can also have your MitID code display activated at Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice).
  4. Remember to activate your MitID code display when you receive it. You cannot use it until it has been activated. Read here how to activate it.

2) Order a MitID code display at Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice).

At Borgerservice, you can both receive and activate a MitID code display.

  • Remember to book an appointment in advance—this is usually required.
  • When you arrive at Borgerservice, you must be able to identify yourself with valid ID, such as a passport or driver’s license.

How to activate your MitID code display

When you receive your MitID code display, it must be activated before it can be used.

You can activate your MitID code display in two ways:

  1. With your passport/foreign ID card in the MitID app.
  2. By visiting a Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice).

1) Activate your MitID code display in the MitID app with your passport/foreign ID card

  1. Download the MitID app from the Danish Agency for Digital Government in the Apple App Store or Google Play, if you do not already have it.
  2. Open the MitID app and tap the menu at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Activate.
  4. Select Activate your MitID and then Get started.
  5. Choose Passport/ID card.
  6. Accept the Terms and Conditions and read the Privacy Policy.
    You must now confirm your identity using your passport/ID card. You will go through the following steps: 1) Scan the passport/ID card code, 2) Read the passport/ID card chip, 3) Scan your face. Read here how to scan your passport/ID card and your face. 
  7. When you reach the step where you choose what to activate/order, select MitID code display.
  8. You will then see the text “Do you have a code display?” Tap Yes, activate.
  9. Create and confirm a password.
  10. Enter the serial number found on the back of your MitID code display.
  11. Then enter the 6-digit one-time code shown when you press the button on your MitID code display.
  12. Your MitID code display is now activated and ready for use.

2) Activate your MitID code display at Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice). 

If you, for example, do not have a passport/foreign ID card or need help, you can have your MitID code display activated at Borgerservice.

  • Remember to book an appointment in advance—it is usually required.
  • When you arrive at Borgerservice, you must be able to identify yourself with valid identification, such as a passport or driver’s license.

How to use your MitID code display

When you need to log in or approve something with the MitID code display, you must first enter your user ID and a 6-digit one-time code from the device. Then enter your password, and you have now approved with MitID.

Step by step guide

  1. Go to the website or app where you want to log in or approve with MitID and find the Log in button.
  2. Enter your user ID and click Continue. You created your user ID when you first got MitID. You will need it every time you log in or approve with MitID.
  3. Note that the first time you use the MitID code display, you must choose to approve with it in the future. After entering your user ID, tap 'Change MitID identification method' and select MitID code display.
  4. Read what you are about to approve with MitID. If the text does not match what you want to do, tap Cancel.
  5. Press the button on your MitID code display. Hold the device so that the button is on your left. The MitID code display will turn on and show you a 6-digit one-time code.
  6. Enter the 6-digit one-time code from the code display on the screen and tap Continue.
  7. Then enter your password. You created this password when you activated your MitID code display.
  8. You are now logged in with MitID.
