Forgot/change PIN code for MitID app

The PIN-code is your personal 6-digit code that you use every time you open the MitID app. If you have forgotten your PIN-code, your MitID app has been temporarily locked, or you want to change your PIN-code, you need to create a new one.

Choose how you want to change your PIN code for the MitID app:

1) Change PIN code using passport/foreign ID card in the MitID app

You need to scan your passport/foreign ID card and your face with the MitID app to confirm your identity. After that, you can create a new PIN code and use the app again. Read about the requirements for your passport/foreign ID card and your phone, before you proceed.

Step by step guide

  1. Open the MitID app and tap the menu at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap App Settings.
  3. Tap PIN code.
  4. Tap Forgot your PIN code?.
  5. Read the information and tap Next.
  6. Select user (if there are multiple users on this app).
  7. Choose Use passport/ID card and tap Next.
  8. Accept the Terms and Conditions, read the Privacy Policy, and tap Next.
  9. You now need to verify your identity with your passport/ID card. You will go through the following 3 steps: 1) Scan the passport/ID card code, 2) Read the passport/ID card chip and 3) Scan your face. Read how to scan your passport/ID card and face.
  10. Create your new 6-digit PIN code and tap Next.
  11. Repeat your new 6-digit PIN code and tap Next.
  12. Choose whether you want to approve with biometrics (fingerprint/Touch ID/Face ID) going forward.
  13. Your PIN code has now been changed.

Do you have a foreign passport/ID card and no Danish CPR number?

If you have a foreign passport/ID card and no Danish CPR number, you must obtain a P-code before you can create a new PIN code.

2) Change PIN code using your current PIN code or biometrics in the MitID app

You can change your PIN code in the MitID app if you know your current PIN code or if biometrics (fingerprint/Touch ID/Face ID) are enabled.

Step by step guide 

  1. Open the MitID app and tap the menu at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap App Settings.
  3. Tap PIN code.
  4. Tap Change your PIN code.
  5. Read the information and tap Next.
  6. Select user (if there are multiple users on this app).
  7. Enter your current PIN code or use biometrics (fingerprint/Touch ID/Face ID).
  8. Create your new 6-digit PIN code and tap Next.
  9. Repeat your new 6-digit PIN code and tap Next.
  10. Choose whether you want to approve with biometrics (fingerprint/Touch ID/Face ID) going forward.
  11. Your PIN code has now been changed.

3) Change PIN code by logging in to MitID.dk

You can change your PIN code on your profile page when you are logged in to MitID.dk. Note that you can log in to MitID.dk without using a PIN code if, for example, you have a MitID code generator or an extra MitID app.

Step by step guide 

  1. Log in to MitID.dk. 
  2. Find the field Identification methods and click View.
  3. A list will now appear with active identification methods (MitID app, code generator, code audio reader, and chip).
  4. Click Send new PIN next to the app where you want to change your PIN code.
  5. Check the box Yes, I would like to reactivate the MitID app and click Continue.
  6. You will now receive a temporary PIN code via SMS, which you will need to use to change your PIN code in the MitID app.
  7. Open the MitID app.
  8. Tap the menu at the top of the screen.
  9. Tap App settings.
  10. Tap PIN code.
  11. Tap Forgot your PIN code?.
  12. Read the information and tap Next.
  13. Select Temporary PIN code.
  14. Enter the 8-digit temporary PIN code you received via SMS.
  15. Create your new 6-digit PIN code and tap Next.
  16. Repeat your new 6-digit PIN code and tap Next.
  17. Choose whether you want to approve using biometrics (fingerprint/Touch ID/Face ID) going forward.
  18. Your PIN code has now been changed.

4) Change PIN code with help from MitID Support

MitID Support can help you create a new PIN code. MitID Support can send you a temporary PIN code via SMS, which you then use to set up a new PIN code in the MitID app. 

Important to know

  • You need to call MitID Support to get help; you cannot contact them in writing. Call MitID Support at +45 33 98 00 10.
  • When you speak with MitID Support, you must identify yourself. You will be asked to provide either your passport or driver’s license number (valid Danish or Greenlandic driver’s license or passport) and then answer a series of questions based on your information in the CPR register. If you cannot answer enough questions, MitID Support will not be able to assist you
  • The temporary PIN code is valid for 30 minutes from the time you receive it.

Step by step guide

  1. When you have received a temporary PIN code from MitID Support, open the MitID app.
  2. If your MitID app says it is temporarily locked, tap Change PIN code on the home screen. Then go to step 8 and follow the remaining steps.
  3. If your MitID app says it is ready for use, tap the menu at the top of the screen.
  4. Then tap App settings.
  5. Tap PIN code.
  6. Tap Forgot your PIN code?.
  7. Read the information and tap Next.
  8. Select Temporary PIN code.
  9. Enter the 8-digit temporary PIN code you received via SMS.
  10. Create your new 6-digit PIN code and tap Next.
  11. Repeat your new 6-digit PIN code and tap Next.
  12. Choose whether you want to approve with biometrics (fingerprint/Touch ID/Face ID) going forward.
  13. Your PIN code has now been changed.

5) Change your PIN code at Citizen Service Centre

At Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice), you can get help changing your password.

  • Remember to book an appointment at Citizen Service Centre. This is usually necessary.
  • When you arrive at Citizen Service Centre, you must be able to identify yourself with valid identification, such as a passport or driver’s license.
Get help at a Citizen Service Centre

If Face ID does not work, you can enable it again in the MitID app.

  1. Open the MitID app.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Select App settings.
  4. Select Face ID. This depends on the operating system of your phone/tablet.
  5. Enable Approve with Face ID.
