MitID audio code reader

The MitID audio code reader is an electronic device that serves as an alternative to the MitID app. The MitID audio code reader looks like a small calculator and is particularly suitable for people with visual impairments. It displays and reads aloud a one-time code, which you use to log in or approve actions with MitID.

How to order a MitID audio code reader

You can order a MitID audio code reader in two ways:

  1. On MitID.dk
  2. By visiting a Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice)

Please note that the first three MitID code readers you order are free of charge. After the three free ones, each additional audio code reader costs 41.71 DKK. You can only have one active device at a time.

1) Order a MitID audio code reader on MitID.dk 

  1. Click here to start ordering process for a MitID audio code reader.
  2. Start by identifying yourself—either by logging in with your MitID or by entering your CPR number and your Danish or Greenlandic passport number. You can also order a MitID audio code reader without identifying yourself, but in that case, you will have to pay for it.
  3. Choose how you would like your MitID code reader delivered:
    • To your address by post. You will receive it within 3–7 business days. Note that delivery may take longer for addresses outside Denmark.
    • For collection at a Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice). Remember to bring valid identification, such as a passport or driver’s license. Read here which identification you must bring. Note that you can also have your MitID audio code reader activated at Borgerservice.
  4. Remember to activate your MitID audio code reader once you receive it. You cannot use it until it has been activated. Read here how to activate it.

2) Order a MitID code reader at Borgerservice

At Borgerservice, you can receive and activate your MitID code reader.

  • Remember to book an appointment in advance. This is usually required.
    When you arrive at Borgerservice, you must be able to identify yourself with valid ID, such as a passport or driver’s license.

How to activate your MitID code audio reader

When you receive your MitID audio code reader, it must be activated before it can be used.

You can activate your MitID audio code reader in two ways:

  1.  With your passport/foreign ID card in the MitID app
  2. By visiting a Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice).

1) Activate your MitID audio code reader in the MitID app with your passport/foreign ID card

  1. Download the MitID app from the Danish Agency for Digital Government in the Apple App Store or Google Play, if you do not already have it.
  2. Open the MitID app and tap the menu at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Activate.
  4. Select Activate your MitID and then Get started.
  5. Choose Passport/ID card.
  6. Accept the Terms and Conditions and read the Privacy Policy.
  7. You must now confirm your identity with your passport/ID card. You will go through the following steps: 1) Scan the passport/ID card code, 2)Read the passport/ID card chip, 3)Scan your face. Read here how to scan your passport/ID card and your face.
  8. When you reach the step where you choose what to activate/order, select MitID audio code reader.
    You will then see the text “Do you have a audio code reader?” Tap Yes, activate.
  9. Create and confirm a password.
  10. Enter the serial number printed on the back of your MitID audio code reader.
  11. Then enter the 6-digit one-time code shown or read aloud whe
  12. you press the red button at the bottom right of the code reader.
  13. You can feel the button—it has one raised dot.
  14. Your MitID audio code reader is now activated and ready for use. Read here how to use the MitID audio code reader. 

2) Activate your MitID code reader at Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice).

If you, for example, do not have a passport/foreign ID card or need help, you can have your MitID code reader activated at Borgerservice.

Remember to book an appointment in advance. It is usually required.

When you arrive, you must be able to identify yourself with valid identification, such as a passport or driver’s license.

How to use your MitID audio code reader

When you need to log in or approve something with the MitID audio code reader, you must first enter your user ID and a 6-digit one-time code from the code reader. Then enter your password, and you have now approved with MitID.

Step by step guide

  1. Go to the website or app where you want to log in or approve with MitID and find the Log in button.
  2. Enter your user ID and click Continue. You created your user ID when you first got MitID. You will need it every time you log in or approve with MitID.
  3. Note that the first time you use the MitID audio code reader, you must choose to approve with it in the future. After entering your user ID, click 'Change MitID identification method' and select MitID audio code reader.
  4. Read what you are about to approve with MitID. If the text does not match what you want to do, click Cancel.
  5. Press the red button at the bottom right of the MitID audio code reader. You can feel the button—it has one raised dot. The code reader will turn on and display/read aloud a 6-digit one-time code.
  6. Enter the 6-digit one-time code from the MitID audio code reader on the screen and click Continue.
  7. Then enter your password. You created this password when you activated your MitID audio code reader.
  8. You are now logged in with MitID.

"Red button" and one-time code

A single tap on a red button in the lower right corner reads out the one-time code that you need to use when authenticating with MitID. You can also notice that the red button has a single dot.

"Red button" and other functions

Together with other keys, the red button can control functions such as one-time code repetition, speed, volume and language. Hold down the red button while pressing another button. As a rule of thumb, the buttons on the right turn up slightly, and the buttons on the left turn down.

There are 9 functions in total:

  1. Show and read the one-time password (only red button)
    Press the ‘red button’ which is placed on the lower right. You can feel the button has a slight bump in the surface. You need the one-time password in order to approve with MitID.
  2. Read the one-time password again (red button + 0)
    Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘0’, which is placed on the left of the ‘red button’.
  3. Turn up the volume (red button + 9) 
    Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘9’, which is placed right above the ‘red button’.
  4. Turn down the volume (red button + 7)
    Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘7’, which is placed first in the third row from above.
  5. Turn down the reading speed (red button + 4)
    Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘4’, which is placed first in the second row from above.
  6. Turn up the reading speed (red button + 6)
    Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘6’, which is placed last in the second row from above.
  7. Change language – choose between Danish and English (red button + 1)
    Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘1’, which is placed first in the top row.
  8. Turn off the audio code reader (only red button)
    The audio code reader is automatically turned off after 20 seconds without activity. You can also turn it off by pressing the ‘red button’ at the bottom of the audio code reader.
  9. Read the serial number (red button + 5)
    Press the ‘red button’ on the lower right and at the same time press ‘5’, which is placed in the middle of the second row from the top.

You will need the serial number when activating your audio code reader.

  • MitID audio code reader displays a one-time PIN code and reads the code aloud, so you can hear it.
  • You can connect headphones to the MitID code reader, if you do not want others to hear the code.
  • MitID audio code reader can read aloud in Danish and English.
  • You can select the language and adjust the volume on your MitID Audio Code Reader.
  • MitID audio code reader has a battery that is expected to last 10 years with normal use.
